What Is Guacamole?

Guacamole is delicious, nutritious food that most people enjoy.

It started way back in Mexico then made its way to the United States, and I’m so glad it did.

Because it’s that good and usually a staple in my house to have with chips or tacos, especially around the Superbowl and Cinco de Mayo.

The ingredients found in most guacamole recipes usually consist of :

  • Avocado
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Tomatoes
  • Cilantro

Can Dogs Have Guacamole?

The answer to the question is; Dogs should NOT have guacamole!

There are many misconceptions about what dogs can and cannot eat.

In fact, there are foods that dogs eat that you might think is ok to eat that are really not.

Some dog owners just will go ahead and feed their pup without knowing thinking, if I can eat it, they can too.

Then sometimes, you’ll find dog owners who question it and want to learn more first before going ahead and feeding their pup something they aren’t sure is safe for them to eat.

And since you’re reading this… I know you are the dog parent who wants to learn more about your dog’s well-being.

And honestly, I’m glad you do because that’s what any good dog owner should do, in my opinion.

So with that said, believe it, or not guacamole is one of those foods that some dog owners may not have been aware of.

You see:

The problem comes from the main ingredient, which is the Avocado.

We all know that most of us love the taste of avocados; it’s a delicious, nutritious fruit and has many health benefits for us.

So why wouldn’t we think it would be good for our pets as well, right?

But here’s the truth… there are many risks involved in sharing avocados with your dogs.

Keep reading to find out why I think it’s not a good idea.

Why Dogs Shouldn’t Eat guacamole

Guacamole can be harmful to dogs because of the Avocado

Here’s why:

The Avocado contains Persina fungicidal toxin found in the plant, leaves, fruit seed, pit, and skin of avocados. Persin is often higher in count if the Avocado is unripe.

Persin is toxic to animals that don’t have the enzymes required to break it down.

Even though dogs have a higher resistance to persin than other animals, which is a good thing… It could still make your dog sick.

And according to the American Kennel Club, it states that experts are still unsure what amount of persin could be lethal to dogs…

But, one thing they do know is that if ingested in large amounts, it can cause stomach upset and diarrhea in dogs.

And for that reason alone, I would NOT take the chance and feed your dog any guacamole made of avocados.

What Should I Do If My Dog Ate Guacamole?

If your dog does happen to eat a little bit of guacamole, or you’re wondering if a small piece of Avocado hurt my dog?

Don’t panic.

A small amount will not probably affect them, but to be on the safe side, it would be a good idea to watch them for any signs of upset stomach or diarrhea.

If your dog did happen to ingest a large amount and seems to be showing signs of what could be persin toxicity, call your veterinarian immediately.

You can also always call the Pet Poison Hotline, which is open 24/7.

Avocado Poisoning In Dog Symptoms

The following are some of the symptoms of avocado poisoning to look out for.

And again, please do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian if your dog shows any signs of not feeling good after eating guacamole or an avocado itself.

  • Stomach Irritation
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Respiratory troubles
  • Myocardial issues

Treatment For Avocado Toxicity In Dogs

Treatment will depend on what signs your dog is showing. If your dog ate the pit, surgery could be on the table of discussion to remove the avocado pit.

It will most likely be supportive care if it’s the avocado fruit.

Still, your doctor will be the best person to make these decisions, as every case is different.
